美国平面设计协会（AIGA）从1924年开始举办「50佳图书|50佳封面 (50 Books|50 Covers)」比赛，评选出过去一年里在书籍装帧和出版物封面上设计最出色的作品。

它的前身为“Fifty Books of the Year”，随着人们对书本封面的关注度日渐提高，书籍封面设计渐渐加入了评选的范畴。而设计网站Design Observer于2011年开始的合作，也让这项比赛呈现出了新的活力。目前，「50 Books | 50 Covers」已经成为了美国平面设计界历史最悠久的比赛。

曾担任评委的Peter Mendelsund认为，“‘有趣’是设计师们考量的最高标准”。评审委员和Design Observer创立编辑之一的Jessica Helfand则表示，消费者在买书之前对书籍内容的了解有限，所以把封面当作评判标准之一无可厚非。“你不能小看任何一本书，因为纵使是简单的设计也有着深远的含义。”Helfand说。

在设计师和书籍设计爱好者的期待中，近日，AIGA和Design Observer公布了2017年度的「50 Books | 50 Covers」获奖作品。本届比赛一共收到了来自40个国家的近800份书籍和封面设计，其中有11件作品同时获评最佳图书和最佳封面。获奖作品将被收藏进记录了1924年至今获奖作品的AIGA Deaign Archives，实物拷贝则将收藏于耶鲁大学及哥伦比亚大学。
